Sarah Thoroughgood Webb, born 17 September 1850, was the second wife of Charles Phillips.
Sarah was the daughter of John Webb, painter, who was born approx. 1818, and Mary Hamilton, born approx. 1805,
John Webb, aged approx. 30, and Mary Hamilton, aged approx. 43, applied for permission to marry on 14 July 1848. As convicts, they had to apply for permission to marry. They were married on 23 August 1848 "according to the rites of the Church of Scotland" by James Bell, Minister, in the house of Mrs Morris, Melbourne Street [sic], Hobart Town. A thorough search of maps of Hobart Town, made at the time has not provided a location for "Melbourne Street". It is probably a mis-spelling of Melville Street.
John Webb died on 26 December 1869, and Mary Webb died on 19 September 1857. Note that Sarah had only just turned 7 years old when her mother died. By the time Sarah was 19, she had lost both her parents.
John Webb was tried and convicted on 26 October 1841 for "embezzlement of bedroom furniture the property of Mr Wilmot, entrusted to him for the purpose of varnishing". He came from Luton in Bedfordshire. He left Portsmouth on 14 August 1842 on the convict ship "Moffatt" and arrived in Hobart on 28 November 1842. Mary Hamilton "or Kelly or McHarrie" was tried and convicted on 22nd April 1845 for "stealing fowls property of Mrs Murray". She came from Ayr in Scotland and had been widowed twice and had five children. She left London on 29 July 1845 on the convict ship "Lloyds" and arrived in Hobart on 7 November 1845. The fate of her 5 children whom she left behind is, at present, unknown.
As far as can be ascertained, Sarah is the only child of John and Mary Webb. Sarah does not have the middle name of Thoroughgood on her birth cerificate. This name first appears on her marriage certificate when she marries Charles Phillips. She was 27 and described herself as a spinster when she married Charles Phillips.
After Charles Phillips died, Sarah had two daughters, Maude Isobel Phillips, b 1884 and Edith M Phillips, b 1888.
Sarah Phillips died on 8 July 1934. She was buried in the Church of England Cemtery, Rookwood in the same plot as her husband, Charles Phillips. Sadly, this grave has no headstone.
Children:
Charles Edward Phillips
Augustus Lucas Phillips
Maude Isobel Phillips
Edith M Phillips
