Walter Carpenter (1847-1908)

Son of James Carpenter and Mary Carpenter (née Dyckhoff).

 

Born at 11.30pm on 3rd March 1847 at 20 Pratt Street, Camden Town, St Pancras, London[1].

 

1851: 20 Pratt Street, Camden Town, St Pancras, London - Scholar.

 

1861: 11 Grove Street, Camden Town, St Pancras, London.

 

1871: 22 Dacre Street, Lee, Kent - Master Sweep Emp[loying] 1 man[2].

On the night of 2nd April 1871 Walter (24) was living with his wife Amelia Carpenter (24)  and his father James Carpenter (64).

 

1881: 22 Dacre Street, Lee, Kent - Chimney Sweep[3].

On the night of Sunday 3rd April 1881 Walter (34) was living with his wife Amelia Carpenter (34) and their children: Walter (9), scholar; John (6), scholar; Amelia (4), scholar; James J. (2); George C. (1). All the children were born in Lee, Kent.

 

Walter Carpenter (40, widower), a Sweep of 47 Marigold Street, married Ellen Rebecca Carpenter (36, Widow) of the same address at St James Church in the Parish of Bermondsey, London, on 24th October 1887. Ellen Rebecca Carpenter was the widow of Walter's brother Henry Carpenter[4].

 

Kelly's Directory of Kent, Surrey and Sussex (3rd edition, 1891)[5] contains a list of chimney sweepers which has two entries under the Carpenter name: Mrs Ellen Carpenter at 26 Bedford Place, East Greenwich, S.E. and Walter Carpenter at 22 Dacre Street, Lee, S.E.

 

1891: 39A Boone Street, Lee, Kent - Chimney Cleaner/Sweep[6].

On the night of the 1891 census Walter (44, widower) was living with three of his children: John (17), chimney cleaner/sweep; Joseph (12), scholar; and Henry (10), scholar.

 

Walter Carpenter married Ellen Elizabeth H. Watkins in 1892[7].

 

1901: 4 Weardale Road, Lee, Kent - Chimney Sweep[8].

On the night of 31st March 1901 Walter (54, married) was living with his daughter Ann E. Carpenter (18). There were 3 families living in the property - a total of 14 individuals.

 

The Post Office London County Suburbs Directory [Part 1: Street, Commercial, & Trades Directories] for 1906 and 1908 lists Walter Carpenter as a chimney sweeper at 1 Ardmere Rd, Lewisham SE (Hither Green).

 

Walter Carpenter died in 1908[9].

Ellen's father is named as William Taylor, Labourer. The witnesses to the marriage were Edward Scott (signed with a mark) and Caroline Scott.
