Page history last edited by Jon 2 years, 3 months ago

Daughter of Frederick Ernest Carpenter and Emma Sarah Carpenter (née Phillips)

Born 9th June 1907 at 19 Gairloch Road, Camberwell (a receipt for the registration of Kathleen's birth on 19th July 1907 can be found in Carpenter Archive 13).

Baptised 15th November 1907 at St Lukes, Camberwell.

1911: 19 Gairloch Road, Camberwell, London[1]

Kathleen joined Lyndhurst Grove School, Camberwell on 21st May 1912[2] and was awarded certificates for good conduct and meritorious work in 1916-17 and 1917-18, the awarding of medals and prizes having been suspended during the war (See Carpenter Archive 14 and Carpenter Archive 15).

On 19th May 1921 Kathleen left to continue her studies at Borough Polytechnic[3]. At the time Kathleen’s passport was issued on 29th June 1930 her occupation was given as dressmaker[4]

For her 21st birthday Kathleen had a party at Grafton Hall, Dulwich, with caterers[5] and a band playing[6]. Grafton Hall is not particularly well known now but is said to represent to ballroom dancing what Wimbledon represents to tennis[7].

Kathleen married Alfred Arthur Yates on 3rd August 1935 at St Martins Church, Cheriton, Kent, England. They were known by the nicknames Dinah and Bosun within the Phillips family[8].

Kath & Alf lived in Folkestone until their family married and moved away.  After that they moved to a flat in Eastbourne, Sussex.

Kath died in 1992.
