On the night of 6th June 1841 James Carpenter (30) was living with his wife Mary (30) and their children: James (8), Emily (5) and Mary (1).
1851: 20 Pratt Street, Camden Town, St Pancras, London - Brazier and Cow Keeper.
On the night of 30th March 1851 James Carpenter (44) was living with his wife Mary (41) and their children: James (18), a cow keeper; Emily (15), a servant-general; Mary (11), a scholar; Henry (6), a scholar; and Walter (4), a scholar. All the children were shown as having been born in St. Pancras, with the exception of James who was born in St. Giles. James' wife Mary was born in Isleworth. Sarah Frost (18), a servant from Deptford, was recorded as a visitor to the house.

On the night of 7th April 1861 James Carpenter (54) was living with his wife Mary (51) and their children: James (27), a dairy man; Henry (15), a printer; and Walter (14). The enumerator's schedule also shows that James' brother William and his family were present at this address on the night the census was taken.

On the night of 2nd April 1871 James Carpenter (64) was living in the household of his son Walter Carpenter and his daughter-in-law Amelia.
