James Phillips (1823-1891)

Page history last edited by Jon 14 years, 1 month ago

Son of James Phillips and Susannah Phillips (née Lucas)

James Phillips was baptised on August 23rd 1823 at St Paulinus, Crayford, Kent[1].

1841: The Banks, Dartford[2]

James appears in the census as a 17 year old, living with his parents and his six brothers and sisters. It appears that one other person lived in the same house, a 60 year old woman, Johanna Webb, who was born in Kent[3].

James Phillips married Sarah Miller at Swanscombe on 14th January 1844. Sarah Miller was baptised on August 7th 1825 at Holy Trinity, Dartford. Her father was Henry Miller, a labourer. At the time of their marriage both James, who was working as a printer, and Sarah were resident in Greenhithe[4].

1851: 41 Pearl Row, Southwark – Compositor[5]

James appears in this census with his wife, four children and a visitor – Henry Carpenter, 21, an unmarried man born in Gibraltar, Spain, who was working as a printer compositor & pressman at the time of the census.

1861: 17 Portugal Street, St Clement Danes, Westminster – Printer Compositor[6]

James appears in this census with his wife and seven children.

1871: 34 Elliotts Row, Southwark – Letter Press Printer[7]

James appears in this census with his wife, seven children, one daughter-in-law, one granddaughter[8] and a visitor – Esther Tomkins[9], 20, an unmarried woman born in Middlesex, who was working as a domestic servant at the time of the census.

James became a widower when Sarah Phillips died on 21st August 1877 at the age of 53[10].

1881: 22 Elliotts Row, Southwark – Printer Compositor[11]

James appears in this census as a widower, living with three of his children, one grandson and a visitor – Alfred James, 19, an unmarried man born in Leicester, who was working as a printer at the time of the census.

James Phillips (55 years old, widower) married Elizabeth Sarah Humphreys Bowler (45 years, spinster) by licence on 14th July 1881 in the Register Office in the District of St Saviour, Southwark[12]. At the time of their marriage James was working as a printer and his residence at the time of marriage was recorded as 22 Elliotts Row, whilst Elizabeth was living at 58 Holyoak Road. Both their fathers were dead by this point of time[13]. The witnesses to the marriage were C. Phillips and Ellen Miller[14].

1891: 6 Houghton Street, St Clement Danes, Westminster – Printer Compositor[15]

James (65) appears in this census living with his wife Elizabeth S. H. Phillips (65)[16].

James Phillips died at the age of 67 at 6 Houghton Street on 28th August 1891[17]. The cause of death was recorded as Chronic Bronchitis, Anasarca.

  3. The 1841 census uses marks to indicate inhabited houses and this shows that Johanna Webb was living in the same 'inhabited house' as the Phillips family.

  8. Emma Phillips, appears in the 1871 census at the age of 3 and is listed as a daughter which, if taken literally, should indicate that she was the daughter of James and Sarah. However, Emma is listed underneath the name of James' daughter-in-law Emily Phillips and it appears that the enumerator was attempting to show Emma's relationship to Emily rather than to James. Emma's birth certificate shows her parents to be William and Emily Phillips.
  9. Esther Tomkins married James' son George in 1872.
  10. Source: Death Certificate. Sarah's place of residence at the time of her death was recorded as 22 Elliotts Row and the entry under occupation reads 'Wife of James Phillips a Printer-Compositor'. The death was registered on 24th August 1877 by T Phillips son of deceased present at the death and his address was given as 94 Liverpool Street, Walworth Road.

  13. James' father was listed as James Phillips (deceased) who worked as a Trimmer at an Iron Foundry. Elizabeth's father was Samuel George Bowler (deceased) who was a Wine Merchant.
  14. C. Phillips was most likely his son Charles Phillips whilst Ellen Miller was his daughter (after her marriage to John Miller in 1879).

  16. The entry for Elizabeth S. H. Phillips gives her age as 65 and a birthplace of St Martin in the Fields, neither of which tallies with the information from her baptism, marriage and previous census entries.
  17. Source: Death Certificate. James' death at 6 Houghton Street (in the registration district of the Strand, sub-district of St Mary le Strand) was registered on 31st August 1891. The informant was E.S.H.Phillips of 6 Houghton Street, widow of the deceased, who was present at the death. The death certificate states that James’ occupation was Printer Compositor.
