James Henry Phillips was born in Dartford, Kent on 10th July 1844.

 

1851: 41 Pearl Row, Southwark – Scholar[1]

James appears in this census at 6 years old living with his parents, three siblings and a visitor – Henry Carpenter, 21, an unmarried man born in Gibraltar, Spain, who was working as a printer compositor & pressman at the time of the census.

1861: 17 Portugal Street, St Clement Danes, Westminster – Printer Compositor[2]

James appears in this census at 16 years old with his parents and six siblings.

 

James Henry Phillips married Mary Ann Tomkins on February 9th 1863 at the parish church in the parish of St Marks, Clerkenwell. At the time of their marriage James was working as a compositor and both parties were resident at 65 White Lion Street. After their marriage James Henry and Mary Ann Phillips were living at 15 and a half Searles Place (presumably with Mary Ann's parents) and their first child was born at this address four days after their marriage - on 13th February 1863[3].

 

1871: 67 South Street, Camberwell, Surrey – Printer-Compositor[4]

James appears in this census at the age of 26 living with his wife and three children. There are two families living in the property, the other family being that of John Weedon, another Printer-Compositor. 

1881: 244 Southampton Street, Camberwell, Surrey - Printer Compositor[5].

James appears in this census at the age of 36 living with his wife and seven children.

1891: 27 St Georges Street, Camberwell, Surrey – Printer-Compositor[6].

James appears in this census at the age of 46 living with his wife and nine children.

1901: 27 St Georges Street, Camberwell, Surrey – Compositor[7].

James appears in this census at the age of 56 living with his wife and eight children.

 

James Henry Phillips died on the 24th July 1906 at 27 St Georges Street, Peckham in the Parish of Camberwell[8]. James was buried at Camberwell Old Cemetery on 30th July 1906 in a private grave[9]. At the time of James Henry’s death the gross value of his estate was £537:15:7 (the net value of his personal estate was £520:1:7) and he bequeathed all his possessions to his wife Mary Ann.

The address of 15 and a half Searles Place was given as the place of birth on 13th February 1863 and as the address of the informant on 23rd March 1863 which suggests that the couple lived with Mary Ann's parents for at least a month. However, by the time of her death on 9th September 1864 they have moved to Clark Street in Clerkenwell.

  9. James' burial is recorded in the burial register, held at the offices at Camberwell New Cemetery. The entry (No. 193966) records that James Henry Phillips was 62 years old of 27 St Georges Street. James was buried in private grave number 20063, which was located in square number 39 on the plan of the old cemetery. Receipt No. 14286. The original cemetery plans are illustrated in a large landscape book with fabric pages showing the location of each individual grave - this shows grave number 20063 in the adjacent square, number 51.
