  4. Emma Phillips, appears in the 1871 census at the age of 3 and is listed as a daughter which, if taken literally, should indicate that she was the daughter of James and Sarah. However, Emma is listed underneath the name of James' daughter-in-law Emily Phillips and it appears that the enumerator was attempting to show Emma's relationship to Emily rather than to James. Emma's birth certificate shows her parents to be William and Emily Phillips.

  10. The name of the eleventh child is not yet known - we have only found names for 10 children in our research and from conversations with family members. It seems most likely that the eleventh child died as an infant, never appearing on any census entry.
  11. Source: Gravestone in Camberwell Old Cemetery. The reference for the death certificate (not yet obtained) is given in the volume for the Jan-Mar Quarter, 1912: George C Phillips, 64 years old, Camberwell 1d 975.
  12. The burial register held at the offices of Camberwell New Cemetery includes an entry for the burial of George Charles Phillips (age 64) in a private grave. This entry gives his grave number as 22756 which is located in square number 37 in the cemetery plans.
  13. A study of infant deaths with the surname of Phillips who would never have appeared in census entries generated a sizable list of infants who could be a part of the family. George Charles was the most obvious of these, but there may be other family members who have not been identified from this list.
