Eustace C Carpenter (1881-1973)

Page history last edited by Jon 14 years, 9 months ago

Son of Ernest Lionel Carpenter and Ella Virginia Carpenter (née Fricke)

Born on 10th August 1881[1].

1900: 501 Broadway, Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri - Shoe Stitcher[[2].

On 11th June 1900 Eustace (18) was living with his family in a house owned by Jennie[3][. At this time Jennie (a widow, aged 40) had reverted to using the surname of Carpenter and her two children by Samuel Green were also grouped under the Carpenter surname in the household entry[4]]. The census also shows us that Goldie (20) and Jessie (16) were working as shoe stitchers, whilst Ernest (14), May (9)  and Eddie (7) were at school.

1910: 1100 North Leonard Avenue, St Louis City, Missouri[] - Shoe Cutter in a Shoe Factory[5].

On 16th April 1910 Eustace was living with his mother Jennie (who was the head of the household) and his brothers/sisters: Goldie L., Mae F, Ernest A. and Kenneth E.

On 6 April 1917 the United States declared war on Germany and all men between the ages of 18 and 45 had to register for the draft. Eustace registered on 12th September 1918[6]. Eustace gave his address was 3803a Shenandoah, St Louis, MO[7] and states that he was 37 years old (with his date of birth given as 10th August 1881).

The draft registration card shows that Eustace was a foreman at the factory of Hamilton Brown Shoe Co. at 2350 Randolph, St Louis, MO. Eustace is described as being of medium height, slender build with blue eyes and brown hair. Not all the men who registered actually served in the armed forces and later census entries indicate that Eustace did not  go on to serve.

1920: 3803a Shenandoah [Avenue], St Louis City, Missouri - Foreman in a Shoe Factory[8].

On 1st January 1920[9][] Eustace (38, single) was living with his mother Jennie (a widow, aged 60) and sister Goldie (40, single) who was a trimmer in a millinery store. The family were living in a property rented by Jennie.

1930: 208 Fourth Street, Boonville, Missouri - Foreman, Shoe Factory[10][].

On 15th April 1930 Eustace C. Carpenter (45) was living in a property that he owned (valued at $3650) with his mother Ella V. Carpenter (69).

Eustace C. Carpenter died at the age of 91 on 25th April 1973 in Los Angeles City, California[11].

Footnotes

  1. The 1900 census showed that the second child was called Eustace and that he was born in August 1881 (the United States Census 1900 recorded the month and year of birth for each individual). Eustace's draft registration card gave us the full birth date of 10th August 1881.
  2. US Census 1900.
  3. A qualification on the 1900 census shows that this property was under a mortgage rather than owned free.
  4. The only evidence that they are not born to the same father is the column recording place of birth of father, which records this as Missouri not England. In later census entries even this last trace of their real father changes, and they are shown having a father born in England.
  5. US Census 1910.
  6. This registration date was for men between the ages of 31 and 45 - men born between 11 Sept 1872 and 12 Sept 1900.
  7. This address is also given for his next of kin, Virginia Carpenter.
  8. US Census 1920.
  9. The census was to reflect where individuals were on this night although the actual date of the enumeration was 3rd January 1920 for this street.
  10. US Census 1930.
  11. U.S. Social Security Death Index and California Death Index entries for Eustace C. Carpenter (Social Security Number: 487-09-0498). The date and location of birth is given as 10th August 1881, Missouri which confirms that this is Ernest Lionel Carpenter's son.
