Ella Virginia Fricke (1859-1936)

Page history last edited by Jon 14 years, 10 months ago

Daughter of John D. Fricke from Hanover, Germany.

Born on 3rd September 1859[1]

Married Ernest Lionel Carpenter on 22nd October 1878 in Lafayette County[2][] (the marriage itself was filed and recorded in the Callaway County marriage registers on 25th October 1878[3][).

Ernest and Ella lived in the township of Fulton, Callaway County in Missouri (according to the Federal census of June 1880[4][). The entry tells us that the family was living in their own dwelling house when the enumerator visited[5][. At the time of the census Ernest Lionel Carpenter (31) was working as a coal miner and there were a number of mines in the local area that he could have been working at.  The occupation recorded for Jennie (20) was ‘keeps house’.

The couple’s first child (a daughter), Goldie Carpenter, was born on 6th August 1879[6] and was 10 months old when the census enumerator visited in 1880. A further three children were born in the next six years: Eustace C. Carpenter (1881), Jessie Ernestine Carpenter (1883) and Ernest Alfred Carpenter (1885).

Ernest died on 19th September 1887.

Married Samuel Green on July 15th 1890. The marriage appears to have resulted in a further two children[7] – May[8] (June 1891) and Eddie[9] (December 1892) – but by the time of the 1900 census there is no trace of Samuel Green[10].

1900: 501 Broadway, Jefferson City, Cole County, Missouri[11].

On 11th June 1900 the family were living in a house owned by Jennie[12]. At this time Jennie (a widow, aged 40) had reverted to using the surname of Carpenter and her two children by Samuel Green were also grouped under the Carpenter surname in the household entry[13]. The census also shows us that Goldie (20), Eustace (18) and Jessie (16) were working as shoe stitchers, whilst Ernest (14), May (9)  and Eddie (7) were at school.

1910: 1100 North Leonard Avenue, St Louis City, Missouri[14].

On 16th April 1910 the family were living in a house rented by Jennie. At this time Jennie (a widow, aged 50) was living with five of her children (the missing child is Jessie Ernestine[15]): Goldie L. Carpenter (30, single) who worked as a milliner in a millinery store; Eustace C. Carpenter (28, single) who was a shoe cutter in a shoe factory; Ernest A. Carpenter (24, single) was a soldier in the U.S. Army; Mae F. Carpenter (18, single) worked as a milliner in a millinery store but was out of work on April 15th 1910 (and had spent 16 weeks out of work in 1909); Kenneth E. Carpenter (17, single) was a shoe cutter in a shoe factory but was out of work on April 15th 1910 (and had spent 12 weeks out of work in 1909).

1920: 3803a Shenandoah [Avenue], St Louis City, Missouri[16].

On 1st January 1920[17] the family were living in a property was rented by Jennie. At this time Jennie (a widow, aged 60) was living with two of her children: Goldie (40, single) who was a trimmer in a millinery store; and Eustace (38, single) who was a foreman in a shoe factory.

1930: 208 Fourth Street, Boonville, Missouri[18].

On 15th April 1930 Ella V. Carpenter (69) was living with her son Eustace (the head of the household). Eustace C. Carpenter (45) owned the property, which was valued at $3650.

Ella Virginia Carpenter died at the age of 76 years and 10 months at 8.05am on 27th July 1936 and she was buried/cremated at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Boonville, Missouri on 29th July 1936[19]. At the time of her death Ella was living at 208 Third Street, Boonville, Cooper County, Missouri. The cause of death was given as pernicious anaemia.

Footnotes

  1. Ella Virginia's date of birth is stated on her death certificate.
  2. The marriage was listed in the Callaway County Index to Marriages Volume A, 1855-1915 which indexes the marriages contained in the Callaway County registers but the entry itself states that they were married in Lafayette County. The Carpenter family record book also contains a short entry for the marriage which gave the name as Jenny Frecke and gives the date of 21st October 1878 for the marriage.
  3. Callaway County Marriage Registers, Microfilm Reel C1165 (Volume D, Page 41).
  4. The 1880 census began on 1st June 1880 and the enumeration was to be completed within thirty days. In this instance, the enumerator has recorded that the enumeration took place between the 5th to 7th June 1880. Ernest and Ella's entry appears on page 11 of Supervisor's District 3, Enumeration District 31: Fulton in the County of Callaway.
  5. The 1880 census recorded dwelling houses and families numerically in the order of visitation, rather than by address as we might expect from the 1881 census in the UK. In the census records Ernest and his family are shown as the 75th dwelling house and the 86th family. The next dwelling house visited by the census enumerator appears to hold two families, including another coal miner (originally from Wales). The range of occupations shown on this page of the census enumeration for dwelling houses 71-80 is quite varied and includes a carpenter, mill worker, horse trainer, coal miners, school teachers and preachers.
  6. The 1880 census states the month as August within a column which requires the enumerator to state the month of birth if a child is born within the census year. The California Death Index shows that the full date of birth was the 6th August 1879.
  7. Ella certainly had two more children (the 1900 census states that she had 6 children of whom 6 were still living), but the question of the father is harder to answer with any certainty. It seems likely that the father is Samuel Green but we have no documentary evidence that states this. The census shows us the month and year of their birth which clearly makes it impossible for Ernest to be the father. However, on Eddie's death certificate his father is named as Ulysses Carpenter not Samuel Green.
  8. May appears variously as May or Mae F. Carpenter. The United States Census 1900 records the month and year of birth.
  9. Eddie appears variously as Eddie or Kenneth E. Carpenter. The United States Census 1900 records the month and year of birth.
  10. It is not clear whether Samuel left or died. Jennie is shown as a widow after this date, but this could refer back to Ernest Lionel Carpenter so it is difficult to state with any certainty that Samuel died. At the current time no record of death or obituary has been found.
  11. US Census 1900.
  12. A qualification on the 1900 census shows that this property was under a mortgage rather than owned free.
  13. The only evidence that they are not born to the same father is the column recording place of birth of father, which records this as Missouri not England. In later census entries even this last trace of their real father changes, and they are shown having a father born in England.
  14. US Census 1910.
  15. Although we have not found Jessie we know that she must still be alive as the 1910 census states that Ella Virginia had 6 children, of whom 6 are still alive.
  16. US Census 1920. The schedule also tells us that Jennie's father was born in Hanover, Germany and that his mother tongue was German.
  17. The census was to reflect where individuals were on this night although the actual date of the enumeration was 3rd January 1920 for this street.
  18. US Census 1930. The schedule also tells us that Eustace had a radio set (approximately 40 percent of households had at least one radio at this time). Neither Eustace or Ella had attended school but both could read and write. Ella's father is stated to have been born in Hanover, Germany whilst Eustace's father is stated to have been born in England. Eustace was a foreman in a shoe factory. We also learn that Eustace is not a veteran of the U.S. army.
  19. Certificate of Death. On the death certificate Ella's date of birth is recorded as September 3rd 1859 and she is stated to be the widow of Earnest L. Carpenter. Her parents are named as John D. Fricke from Germany and ? Calvert from Maryland. The informant was E. C. Carpenter of Boonville, Missouri.
