Carpenter Archive 3: Receipt for a dinner for 9 people - 16th August 1845

Page history last edited by Jon 14 years, 8 months ago

Receipt for a dinner for 9 people on 16th August 1845.

The significance of the date is not known but this clearly must have been an important occasion given the nature of the meal and the fact that the receipt was kept by William with the family record book. We assume (but do not know) that the meal was hosted or organised by William Carpenter. The receipt shows that the 9 dinners were accompanied by beer & ale, brandy, port (x4), sherry (x3) and cigars.

The name of  the place charging the bill has been torn away but on the original the last letter is clearly an M.

The location is also unknown, although there are some clues in the printed header:

Wines & Spirits of the Best Quality.

Good Beds & Stall Stabling.

Day & Night Coaches to & from London at all Hours.

Steam Packets to & from London every day.

Sailing Packets to & from Sheerness every Tide.

The reverse has a number of pencil calculations (illustrated below).

Original size: 112mm x  132mm
