Andrew Miller (1759-1840)

Page history last edited by Jon 15 years, 8 months ago

Andrew Miller was born in about 1759[1]. Entries in the parish registers at Guildford and Haslemere, Surrey for his marriage and the baptism of his son, Andrew, record that he was a soldier in the 7th Light Dragoons.

Andrew Miller married Damaris Denyer at Holy Trinity, Guildford on 26th May 1799[2].

It appears that Andrew Miller was a soldier for at least the years 1799 to 1801 based on the two references given in the parish registers. It is possible that Andrew had served with other regiments prior to joining the 7th Light Dragoons and may well have served with other regiments later. The details of the research into Andrew’s military career (and possible origins) are covered in the article Andrew Miller and the 7th Light Dragoons.

In 1815 Andrew’s occupation is given as labourer when his son, William, is baptised in Dartford.

The location of the family in the early 19th century has largely been established by the baptism records found (which are most likely to be incomplete). As far as we can tell, it does not appear that Andrew and his family were living in Dartford in 1801 or 1821 as there are no matching entries in the surviving census records for these years[3].

Andrew Miller died at 5am on 3rd March 1840 aged either 79 (according to the death certificate) or 81 (according to the burial register), and was buried on March 8th 1840. The cause of death was shown as decay of nature. Witness to the death was Mary Marsh, present at the death, of Sharpe’s Yard, High Street, Dartford.

Damaris Miller died at Sharps Yard, Dartford, on 23rd January 1862 at the age of 83[4] and was buried at East Hill Cemetery, Dartford on February 2nd. The death certificate describes Damaris as the widow of Andrew Miller, a labourer at Oil Mills, whilst the burial register for the cemetery[5] states that Damaris was the widow of Andrew Miller (deceased) of Colyers Yard, High Street, Dartford who was formerly a Labourer at the Phoenix Oil Mills[6].
